  3. UNESCO Schools Network

The UNESCO Schools Network includes students and teachers from over 11,500 schools in more than 182 countries. The network acts as a laboratory of ideas by experimenting with innovative teaching and learning approaches to address global challenges.

The Network in Canada

In Canada, the network is active in most provinces and territories and includes over 130 schools. Through local, national, and international projects and initiatives, teachers and students explore the following four thematic action areas:

  1. UNESCO’s mission and mandate

  2. Global Citizenship Education

  3. Education for Sustainable Development and Climate Action

  4. Indigenous Education and Reconciliation

Students learn to reflect on global challenges such as peace, climate action, human rights, cultural diversity, and sustainable development, while contributing to positive change in their own communities.

Sustainable Development Education and Youth Action: The 2024 UNESCO Schools Network National Conference

In April 2024, the UNESCO Schools Network in Canada gathered in Toronto, Ontario for a multi-day conference. Organized in partnership with Learning for a Sustainable Future, CCUNESCO welcomed approximately 150 students and teachers to the Toronto Botanical Gardens, Royal Ontario Museum, and York University.

A series of keynote speakers, activities and workshops on different facets of sustainability kept the students engaged. The students shared their action plans for addressing climate change, covering topics from Indigenous knowledge and reconciliation to water access and the impact of fast fashion. The teachers were also involved in professional development workshops focused on connecting their learning curriculum to climate change and sustainability.

The conference provided a unique opportunity to foster school-level action towards a more sustainable future.
