  3. Biosphere Reserves Network

With 727 sites that are home to some 170 million people in 131 countries, the Biosphere Reserves Network is a world in itself. In these "living laboratories," communities develop stimulating projects to promote the harmonious coexistence of people and nature. Their initiatives have a global impact.

The Network in Canada

Canada's 19 Biosphere Reserves are leaders in creating vibrant, healthy and sustainable communities. The sites span an area of 235,000 km2 within the traditional territories of some 50 Indigenous communities.

As part of the Canadian Biosphere Reserves Association, these model regions meet the objectives of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme:

  • Conserve biodiversity and foster sustainable use of natural resources
  • Mitigate climate and environmental changes and their impact
  • Facilitate sustainable development research and education
  • Build thriving societies, economies, and human settlements

Canada's Biosphere Reserves also share their findings within the Biosphere Reserves Network.
